How To Make An Online eCommerce Store with WordPress (Part 1)

How To Build an Ecommerce store (Part 1)

This post is in the form of a video from WPCrafter. It’s a non-tech tutorial that shows you how to create an E-commerce website using WordPress. It’s pretty involved so we’re going to take it in bite-size chunks.

Here’s part 1…

In this extended video tutorial we are going to build this beautiful, stunning, e-commerce website and we’re going to go through this step by step.

Let me show you around the site first. So here is the homepage and you can see it’s simple and it’s elegant. We have this beautiful ‘categories’ here to categorise your products right here and also showcase your products. This is what your shop pages going to look like. There is a grid here to show the various products that you sell and there’s interactive features in this shop grid. We also have filtering options here on the left, that you could also have if you wanted.

This is what a product page is going to look like. It prominently shows the images that you have of your product and when a visitor hovers over the image it’s going to show the different portions of it, like that. Then here is a variable product and I’m going to show you how to create variable products on this website. That’s a product with different colours and/or different sizes, so your customers can go here and choose what they want and then add it to the cart.

You see we have this really nice shopping cart icon in the header, so if someone adds a product to the shopping cart it’s going to be there in the header. They can move their cursor over it and see everything in the shopping cart, jump to their cart, or just go straight to checking out. Here is what the shopping cart’s going to look like this platform’s going to except coupons and here is where people can filter the different products that they’ve added to the cart.

Here is the checkout and this is the most simple yet elegant checkout screen I’ve ever seen on a website. We’re going to talk about taxes, shipping and all of that with this e-commerce website. It’s a full e-commerce tutorial. That’s probably why the video is so long. And then right here is the best part of all. You’re going learn how to use a page builder to make it a point and click. It’s simple to change anything you want with the website.

Now, here is why you want to invest your time in watching this tutorial in the first place. I don’t just show you how to make what I made. I show you how to make anything that you want to make and that’s what you’re going to get out of investing your time in watching this video. I’m going to show you to how to make the website that you want to make. I’m going to show you how to have the e-commerce store that you want to have. I mean to give you all the tools, the knowledge, and the training in this extended video so that you can build anything you want, not just what you’re seeing right here. We’re going to use something called WordPress which is free. We’re going to to be using a WordPress theme name “Astra” and that’s also free. And this page builder that makes it point-and-click easy, that’s named Elementor. That is also free! And then were going to use WooCommerce to power this e-commerce platform and that is free as well.

So all the tools that you see me using throughout this video, they’re not going to cost you anything. The reason I chose tools that were not going to cost you anything is because I wanted to make it as easy as possible for you to get an e-commerce store up and running. If you don’t know me, my name is Adam and I’m from WPCrafter, I make WordPress tutorial videos for non-techies. If you’re new here consider clicking on the subscribe button, and if you don’t want to miss a thing, click on the notification bell and YouTube will let you know when I have new videos. I look forward to spending this time with you showing you how to build this website, showing you how to build a site for you, a platform for you where you can sell your products. Let’s just go ahead and jump right on into the tutorial.

Let’s take a moment to go over everything that you can expect to learn in this tutorial video. Now, I am going to preface and just say right up front obviously you could tell this is going to be a long video and what you’re going notice is that my talking pace, the pace that I speak is perfect for increasing your playback speed. So one of the nice things about YouTube right now is you can increase the playback speed if you like. however I speak at this pace on purpose because some people prefer it to be slow and methodical. But you can speed it up if you like. I know when I watch my own videos back I watch it at 1.25 pace and many people that are subscribers to the channel will watch my videos back at a 2.0 x speed so essentially, you can get through the material twice as fast.

So here is what to expect in this tutorial video. First, we’re going to set up a domain name and order a web hosting account. Then were going to install an SSL certificate (this is crucial. If you already have web-hosting you must have an SSL certificate). We’re going to go through what that is. Essentially, if you don’t have it you are not going to be able to accept payments on your website and that’s crucial for an e-commerce based website. It’s something you have to have. Some hosts give it to you for free, some web hosts charge $99 per domain per year for it. So, when we talk about domain names and hosting and all that kind of stuff I’m going to show you some Webhosts that are not going to hose you in terms of the cost of an SSL certificate, but this is one of those things you want to get set up right from the beginning and we’re going to do it in this tutorial.

Next were going to go over briefly how to create a logo or some resources to have a logo created. We’ll look at choosing a colour palette, choosing a font pair. These are all important things if you want to personalize your website and actually build a brand. These three parts are very crucial.

Then you’re going to learn about WordPress. This is going to be the platform that we use for this e-commerce website. It’s the foundation and then we’re going to use something called Elementor, which is the WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) page builder, so that we can build beautiful pages. The beauty of how this tutorial is going to go is, I’m going to teach you in such a way that you can use what you learn to build anything that you want to build for yourself so you’re not going to be limited to just what we’re building in this video. It reminds me of that very famous parable. If you feed a man he’ll eat for a day but if you teach them how to fish he can feed himself for a lifetime. I’m sure I just butchered it but you get the point.

I want to teach you how to build websites, not just give one to you. I want to teach you how to do it using Elementor. You’re going to learn that in this tutorial, then you’re going to learn WooCommerce. WooCommerce is what your web store (your E store / e-commerce platform) is going to be based on. You’ll learn about WooCommerce in this video. Then to wrap the video up you’ll learn about search engine optimisation. It’s not going to be an in-depth SEO tutorial, (I do have separate in-depth tutorials on search engine optimisation) but it’s going to be enough to get you started. Then, we’re going to do two crucial things. I’m going to show you how to backup your website (it is crucial that you have regular backups of your website) were going to cover that. Then security is also crucial. You have to have security on your website, especially because it’s going to be an e-commerce website. So, if you stick with me in this tutorial to the very end, I promise you that I will have taken every minute of your time and consideration and will not waste any of it. I want you to have all the tools that you need to be successful and have the outcome that you’re watching this tutorial for. And that is to build a full e-commerce website.
